The weekend Intensive Introduction to Permaculture: For those that are local to Dixon, Missouri we are offering a weekend Permaculture Course. Every Saturday from 7 March - 30 May (with Memorial day weekend off) the course will be taught in the PRI classroom and around the fields and green houses. The class will start at 10:00, break for lunch around 1:00 and be done no later than 5:00. On the third Saturday of each month, the participants are invited to stay for an evening meal and join the Permaculture Group (see its own blog page). Tuition $950, and includes a lunch meal each day of class.
Composting Toilets and Straw bale: We have decided to combine two elements that Permaculturist love to work with: turning waste into a useful product and natural building. This three day work shop will focus on building a critical piece of infrastructure, the toilet. We have a site picked out and ready to go. From 13-15 May we will be putting up the walls, finishing up the 'basement', installing the seats, and explaining the practical side of composting toilets. Because the toilet is only one third of the project we will also be setting up the carbon bio mass site and the composting site.
Thermal Mass Rocket Stove Water Heater Workshop: Not just a cob thermal mass rocket stove, but one that heats the water that will be used for the showers at the PRI. We will cover the basics of cobbing, the principles of a rocket stove, and the how-to of coupling that with a water heater. Because this is such a small project (in size, not scope) seats are more limited than with our other workshops. The two day workshop will be held on June 5-6. We may get to finish some of the stove, but the focus is getting a working system up and running. Additional cob will be added in future workshops.
Cobbing the stove and oven: A workshop that will focus on the beauty of cob. We will be adding to the thermal mass rocket stove with the how to knowledge of finishing plaster, the long term care needs of any cob structure, and the beauty of a hand crafted piece. This is a one day work shop that is to be held on 13 June. We will also be holding a one day work shop to construct a cob oven on 20 June. Chef hat and skill not included in price of workshop.
Straw Bale House: Going more in depth with the concerns of Straw bale than is possible with the May workshop, this week long workshop will take you from the foundation all the way up to the finished walls. We are constructing a house to be used as a residence for the PRI workers. The workshop will go over why the site was chosen and what to look for in a site, the actual construction of the straw bale house, and the bringing in of utilities (water being the main concern.) Running from Monday -Saturday, participants are welcome to show up the day prior and stay over night for ease of travel. Meals will be provided as part of the workshop.
